Financial advisor directories for retirees: a comparison guide (2026)
Compare the service relationship before comparing the sales pitch.
Full disclosure: this guide is published by Sam’s List, one of the platforms discussed. Some professionals participate in paid Sam’s List programs for visibility or leads. This article compares published search features and limitations. Inclusion and order do not rank individual professionals or establish their quality, suitability or likely results.
Retirement is a reason to define the advice you need carefully, not a reason to accept the first introduction. Do you want a plan, ongoing implementation, investment management or coordination with other professionals? This guide compares discovery routes so you can prepare a stronger first conversation.

| XY Planning Network: advisor directory | For browsing by planning niche | Advisor-specific fees and minimums | Confirm scope and pricing with each advisor. |

Ask what the plan includes
Request a sample agenda and description of the planning process. Explain which decisions are approaching and which parts you want help implementing. Avoid assuming that portfolio management includes every planning conversation you need.
Translate fees into an understandable comparison
Ask for a written explanation of the fee arrangement and any additional costs. Clarify minimums, the services covered and how costs change over time. The purpose is a fair comparison, not a claim that one billing model suits everyone.
Check the relationship behind the brand
Ask who will meet with you, who does the analysis and what happens if the lead advisor changes. Review registration and relevant credentials through official records. A directory profile, credential or positive review cannot guarantee future results.
Questions to take to the first call
- What will you do beyond managing investments?
- What is the full fee arrangement and what is excluded?
- Will you act as a fiduciary throughout our work together?
- How will you coordinate with my tax and legal professionals?
Questions people ask
Does fee-only mean there are no conflicts?
No. Compensation structure is one factor. Ask about the actual arrangement and the incentives it creates.
Is an advisor match an endorsement?
Do not treat it as one. A match is a starting point for interviews and independent checks, not a guarantee of fit or results.
What people bring to Sam’s List
In the October 2, 2026 snapshot of Sam’s List’s public demand data, the following selections appeared:
| Reported need or situation | Recorded selections |
|---|---|
| Retirees | 23 |
Describe your retirement stage and desired scope. A retirement label does not establish whether an engagement includes a written plan, ongoing advice or investment management.
These are recorded quiz selections from February 23, 2024 through October 2, 2026, not unique clients, completed engagements or a representative market survey. The public aggregation excludes records marked not a fit and identified test emails; incomplete quiz records can remain. Multiple selections may overlap. Cells below 10 are suppressed.

Check the individual professional
Before engaging an advisor, check registration and disciplinary information in official records and confirm fees, scope and fiduciary responsibilities directly. Registration or a directory listing does not establish approval, expertise or suitability for your circumstances.
