Financial professional directories for business owners selling a company: a comparison guide (2026)

Build the team around the work before and after the transaction.

By Sam’s List · Researched October 2, 2026

Full disclosure: this guide is published by Sam’s List, one of the platforms discussed. Some professionals participate in paid Sam’s List programs for visibility or leads. This article compares published search features and limitations. Inclusion and order do not rank individual professionals or establish their quality, suitability or likely results.

Selling a company is not one professional assignment. Company records, transaction support, personal planning and legal work may belong to different people. A directory can help identify candidates, but the first useful document is a responsibility map showing who owns each piece.

Sam’s List: for exploring several financial specialties

Useful when you are still assembling the accounting, CFO and personal-finance parts of the team. Evaluate transaction experience directly.

What to check: Profile fit is a starting point, not proof of expertise.

Published platform information: Sam’s List.

Toptal: for a defined finance-leadership assignment

Consider an assisted talent search when you have a specific finance project and need someone to own it.

What to check: Clarify the trial, fees and continuity terms.

Published platform information: Toptal: fractional CFOs.

NAPFA: for a fee-only personal-planning search

A separate route for the owner’s personal planning relationship, with transaction experience still to be established.

What to check: Fee-only does not mean low-cost or conflict-free.

Published platform information: NAPFA: fee-only financial advising.

CPAdirectory: for identifying cpas to interview

Start with a CPA-specific search when that role is missing. A general listing does not establish transaction expertise.

What to check: Confirm availability and current license separately.

Published platform information: CPAdirectory.

Separate company work from personal work

List the business deliverables and the owner’s planning questions separately. Ask each candidate where their responsibility ends and which other specialists they expect to work with. Legal representation and transaction-specific advice must be scoped with the appropriate professionals.

Ask for comparable experience carefully

Request anonymized examples with a similar business model and transaction context. Clarify the candidate’s personal role in those engagements. Being associated with a transaction is different from having owned the work you need.

Agree on communication before the timetable tightens

Set out who attends coordination calls, who can share documents and who resolves conflicting assumptions. Ask about availability around the expected timetable and how additional work is approved. A clear collaboration process is often more useful than another impressive biography.

Questions to take to the first call

Questions people ask

Can my current accountant handle everything?

Ask them to map their scope against the work required. They may be well placed to do part of it and bring in others for the rest.

Does appearing in a directory prove deal experience?

No. Use interviews, references where appropriate and a detailed scope to evaluate the experience relevant to your engagement.

Check the individual professional

Before engaging an advisor, check registration and disciplinary information in official records and confirm fees, scope and fiduciary responsibilities directly. Registration or a directory listing does not establish approval, expertise or suitability for your circumstances.
