Best accountant directories for small business owners (2026)

Start with the problem you need solved, then choose where to look.

By Sam’s List · Researched October 2, 2026

Full disclosure: this guide is published by Sam’s List, one of the platforms discussed. Some professionals participate in paid Sam’s List programs for visibility or leads. This article compares published search features and limitations. Inclusion and order do not rank individual professionals or establish their quality, suitability or likely results.

A business owner asking for “an accountant” may need three different things: clean books, help filing returns, or someone to make the numbers useful for decisions. Hiring before separating those needs makes proposals hard to compare. The best directory is the one that helps you form a relevant shortlist, not the one with the longest list of names.

Sam’s List: best for exploring several financial roles

Start here if your brief spans bookkeeping, accounting and CFO help. Use the profile as a conversation starter, then test the actual scope with the firm.

What to check: Profile fit is a starting point, not proof of expertise.

Published platform information: Sam’s List.

QuickBooks ProAdvisor: best for quickbooks-centered work

Choose this first when the operational problem sits in QuickBooks. Ask how the proposed work will change the close process after the initial cleanup.

What to check: Software certification is not a CPA license.

Published platform information: QuickBooks: Find an accountant.

CPAdirectory: best for a local cpa search

Use a credential-and-location starting point when you know the professional role you need.

What to check: Confirm availability and current license separately.

Published platform information: CPAdirectory.

Thumbtack: best for a clearly scoped project

Useful for comparing candidates against a written assignment. It works less well when the assignment is simply “fix our finances.”

What to check: Compare identical scopes, not just headline prices.

Published platform information: Thumbtack: accountant marketplace.

Decide what you are buying

Write down the outputs you expect each month and each year. For example: reconciled accounts, a monthly reporting package, tax filings and a quarterly planning conversation. Do not assume that a monthly bookkeeping fee includes return preparation or that an annual return includes ongoing advice.

Compare the first 90 days

Ask each firm to separate onboarding, historical cleanup and recurring work. A proposal that looks expensive may include correcting old records; a cheaper one may begin only after you pay someone else to do that work. A timeline with named responsibilities is more useful than a broad promise of peace of mind.

When a directory is not the next step

If you already have an accountant who communicates well but your needs have changed, ask for a revised scope before starting over. The missing service may be available through the existing firm or a clearly defined second relationship.

Questions to take to the first call

Questions people ask

Do I need a CPA for everyday bookkeeping?

Define the assignment before choosing a title. Ask candidates what qualifications and oversight the work requires, especially if it includes services beyond routine bookkeeping.

Should I choose the cheapest proposal?

Only after confirming that the proposals cover the same period, records, deliverables and follow-up. Otherwise you are comparing different services.

What people bring to Sam’s List

In the October 2, 2026 snapshot of Sam’s List’s public demand data, the following selections appeared:

Reported need or situationRecorded selections
Tax prep & filing272
Tax strategy & planning251

A tax return and forward-looking tax planning are separate scopes. Ask whether a recurring engagement covers both.

These are recorded quiz selections from February 23, 2024 through October 2, 2026, not unique clients, completed engagements or a representative market survey. The public aggregation excludes records marked not a fit and identified test emails; incomplete quiz records can remain. Multiple selections may overlap. Cells below 10 are suppressed.
