Find help for the stage you are in, with a clear plan for what comes next.

By Sam’s List · Researched October 2, 2026

Full disclosure: this guide is published by Sam’s List, one of the platforms discussed. Some professionals participate in paid Sam’s List programs for visibility or leads. This article compares published search features and limitations. Inclusion and order do not rank individual professionals or establish their quality, suitability or likely results.

A pre-revenue founder and a company preparing for a funding round should not send the same accounting brief. The useful search starts with current work: keeping records reliable, preparing filings, reporting to investors, or building a forecast. “Startup specialist” is a claim to investigate, not a complete scope.

Sam’s List: best for comparing startup finance roles

Use a broad financial-professional search to distinguish bookkeeping, tax and CFO responsibilities. Ask each candidate which stage they serve well.

What to check: Profile fit is a starting point, not proof of expertise.

Published platform information: Sam’s List.

QuickBooks ProAdvisor: best for a quickbooks operating foundation

A practical starting point when the immediate task is getting the accounting workflow under control.

What to check: Software certification is not a CPA license.

Published platform information: QuickBooks: Find an accountant.

CPAdirectory: best for finding a cpa to interview

Useful when a CPA relationship is the specific goal. Startup experience must still be established in conversation.

What to check: Confirm availability and current license separately.

Published platform information: CPAdirectory.

Toptal: best for a defined cfo talent search

Consider a talent-matching route when the brief is forecasting or finance leadership. It does not remove the need to define deliverables.

What to check: Clarify the trial, fees and continuity terms.

Published platform information: Toptal: fractional CFOs.

Separate compliance from decision support

List recurring recordkeeping and filing work separately from cash forecasting, board reporting and fundraising support. Ask whether one firm will own both or whether you need two providers. An engagement can be good at one and intentionally exclude the other.

Interview for your business model

Explain how you collect revenue, pay people and track operating performance. Ask the candidate to describe an anonymized engagement with comparable complexity. A recognizable startup client name is less useful than understanding who performed the work and what changed.

Keep the handover manageable

Before signing, agree on system access, document ownership and the process for moving to a new provider or internal hire. Founders often outgrow the first engagement. A clean handover plan is part of buying the service well, not a sign that the relationship is doomed.

Questions to take to the first call

Questions people ask

Can one firm do our books, taxes and CFO work?

Some firms offer several services. Ask who performs each one, what review process applies and which deliverables are actually included.

Should our first hire be a fractional CFO?

That depends on the assignment. If the underlying records are unreliable, clarify who will fix them before commissioning strategic analysis.
