Crypto Startup Accountant: 5 Situations and Who Fits Each
Sam's List Editorial | 2026-10-12
A crypto startup accountant is not one job. Some founders need help with tokens the company holds, others need the tax on a token grant planned, and others need a team to close the books every month.
Five situations follow. The firms are Crypto Tax Made Easy, a digital asset tax firm in Little Silver, New Jersey; Doug Johnson CPA in Los Angeles, which lists equity compensation as a specialty; and Iota Finance, a Florida-based firm for monthly accounting, tax and fractional CFO work. The list is grouped by situation and is not a ranking. Every firm named is a vetted Sam's List member. The firms written up below are paid featured members of Sam's List.
1. Crypto Startup Accountant for Company-Held Tokens
The company holds tokens, or received them in a raise, a grant or a partnership, and nobody has settled how to book or tax them. The IRS has treated virtual currency as property since Notice 2014-21, so a sale or swap of tokens can generally produce a gain or loss. How presale tokens are treated, and when income is recognized, depends on the terms and is not fully settled.
A crypto startup accountant starts with an inventory: every wallet, exchange account and treasury address, with dates and values at receipt.
Crypto Tax Made Easy is a digital asset tax firm serving startups, small business owners and real estate investors nationwide. It was founded in 2021 and lists no income or revenue minimums.
Crypto Tax Made Easy has 6 verified client reviews on Sam's List as of 2026-10-02. Each review is submitted by an individual who identifies as a client of the firm and rates it on communication, subject-matter knowledge, and overall satisfaction. Reviews reflect those individual experiences and do not represent an endorsement by Sam's List. Crypto Tax Made Easy is a paid featured member of Sam's List. Ratings and rankings are not indicative of future performance or results.
The limitation: this is a tax specialist, and its profile does not say it runs monthly bookkeeping or fractional CFO work, so ask. It is a six-person firm with finite capacity, and digital asset rules keep evolving, so confirm current treatment before relying on any position.
2. Token Grant Tax: Founders or Employees Receive Tokens
Founders or staff are granted tokens, or equity that converts to tokens, and the personal tax side has not been planned. Token grant tax may follow the property-for-services rules in IRC section 83, though the treatment of tokens is still developing and depends on the facts. Tokens received for work may be ordinary income at fair market value when received and no longer subject to a substantial risk of forfeiture, and an employee's tokens may be treated as wages, which can mean withholding.
Vesting changes the timing. A section 83(b) election, filed within 30 days of the transfer, may move the income to the grant date. It can help if value rises and hurt if the tokens fall or never vest. The deadline is strict, so ask before the grant, not after.
Doug Johnson CPA lists equity compensation among its specialties and positions itself for high earners with equity compensation.
Doug Johnson CPA has 15 verified client reviews on Sam's List as of 2026-10-02. Each review is submitted by an individual who identifies as a client of the firm and rates it on communication, subject-matter knowledge, and overall satisfaction. Reviews reflect those individual experiences and do not represent an endorsement by Sam's List. Doug Johnson CPA is a paid featured member of Sam's List. Ratings and rankings are not indicative of future performance or results.
The limitation: the profile lists equity compensation, and it does not say the firm specializes in tokens, so ask about token experience. It is a three-person firm founded in 2024 with minimums of $250,000 of income and $250,000 of revenue. Valuing locked or thinly traded tokens is hard for any preparer, and hold-or-sell decisions are a financial advisor question.
3. Startup Fractional CFO: A Funded Company Needs One Place for Everything
You have raised money and need monthly accounting, tax and finance leadership without three vendors who never talk. A startup fractional CFO takes on part of the finance leader's job, such as the budget, cash forecast and investor reporting, for part of the cost of a full-time hire.
Iota Finance offers monthly accounting, tax and fractional CFO work for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs. Its profile lists Igor Tutelman, CPA, as Managing Partner, and it was founded in 2022.
Iota Finance has 14 verified client reviews on Sam's List as of 2026-10-02. Each review is submitted by an individual who identifies as a client of the firm and rates it on communication, subject-matter knowledge, and overall satisfaction. Reviews reflect those individual experiences and do not represent an endorsement by Sam's List. Iota Finance is a paid featured member of Sam's List. Ratings and rankings are not indicative of future performance or results.
The limitation: Iota lists minimums of $200,000 income, $500,000 revenue or $500,000 raised, so an early company may fall outside its range. Its profile does not say it specializes in digital assets, so ask how it handles wallets and token transactions.
4. Crypto Startup Accountant When the Books Need Catching Up First
Some founders have a records problem before a tax problem. Transactions sit unreconciled and wallet activity was never matched to the ledger. No specialist can plan around numbers you cannot see.
The first move is a catch-up close: accounts reconciled, wallets and exchanges tied to the ledger, and a profit and loss statement you believe. We name no firm here, because many accountants and bookkeepers do it well. Ask for a written scope.
The limitation: a catch-up close takes weeks, not days, and costs money before it produces any advice.
5. When You Do Not Need a Crypto Specialist
This is the quiet case, and it is real. The company holds no tokens, nobody has been granted any, and crypto is a payment method you convert to dollars the same day. A general accountant with a clear process may be enough, as long as sales paid in crypto are recorded at their dollar value when received and each conversion is tracked.
The limitation: a grant, a token sale or a treasury allocation can turn a simple company into a complex one quickly. Tell your accountant before the change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a crypto startup accountant do?
A crypto startup accountant books and reports the company's token activity, prepares its tax return and, depending on the firm, advises on grants and treasury. Scope varies: some firms only handle tax, others run monthly accounting. Get what is included in writing before you sign.
How is token grant tax generally treated?
Tokens received for services may be taxed as ordinary income at fair market value when received and vested, and employee grants may involve withholding. A section 83(b) election, made within 30 days of transfer, may change the timing. Treatment depends on the facts and is still developing, so confirm with a qualified tax professional before the grant.
When does a startup need a fractional CFO?
Usually when the founder still does the finance work and decisions are getting bigger, such as a raise or an investor forecast. A startup fractional CFO gives you part-time finance leadership, not bookkeeping, so confirm who owns the monthly close.
Can one firm handle both crypto tax and monthly accounting?
Some can, and many split the work: a specialist handles token tax while another firm runs the books. Either way, one person should own the wallet records. Ask each firm what it covers and what it hands off.
