Start with the work you need completed each month. Compare bookkeepers by the services they list, the businesses they work with, their software experience and client reviews. Use pricing where shared as a starting point, then ask for a written scope and a quote for your situation.
What to look for
- A clear scope: which accounts, transactions and reporting tasks are included, and whether catch-up or cleanup work costs extra.
- Experience with your accounting software and the systems you need it to connect with.
- An agreed schedule for reconciliations, reports and questions, with a named day-to-day contact.
- A clear division of responsibility between the bookkeeper, your team and anyone handling tax preparation or financial advice.
Questions to ask before you hire
- What will you need from me to start, and how will we share records?
- Which reports will I receive, when will they be ready, and who will explain them?
- How are catch-up work, payroll or other services quoted if they are outside the monthly scope?
- What happens to the fee and scope if transaction volume grows, and how can I access my records if we stop working together?
