How a Crypto Investor Found Two Years of Taxable Swaps Inside an Automated Rebalancing Tool
Sam's List Editorial | 2026-09-16
This is an illustrative anonymized composite drawn from patterns that recur across crypto tax work. It is not a specific client engagement, and no outcome described here is guaranteed or predictive of anyone else's result.
Crypto rebalancing tax was not a phrase the investor had ever heard. His description of the two years was simple: "I didn't do anything."
He meant it literally. He had set a target allocation across a handful of assets, connected an automated rebalancing tool, and then left it alone through two tax years. No trades placed. No deposits. Nothing sold for dollars. In his mind it was a hold, and a hold is not a taxable event.
That assumption is the one thing he had not checked, and the tool had been busy the entire time.
Crypto Rebalancing Tax: What the Tool Was Actually Doing
A rebalancing tool keeps a portfolio at its target weights. When one asset runs, the tool trims it and buys the others to bring the mix back in line.
Trimming is selling. Buying is acquiring. Each rebalance is a disposal of one asset and an acquisition of another.
A crypto-for-crypto swap is generally a disposal for tax purposes, and gain or loss is measured on it, whether or not any dollars were involved. The absence of a cash leg is exactly what makes it feel like a non-event, and that intuition is where the whole problem starts.
Two years of periodic rebalancing across several assets is not one decision. It is hundreds of small disposals.
Why the Annual Statement Hid the Crypto Rebalancing Tax Problem
The tool produced a year-end summary, and the investor had read it.
It showed portfolio value at the start, portfolio value at the end, and performance. That is a perfectly good investor report and a nearly useless tax document. Performance answers "did this go up," and the tax question is "what did you dispose of, when, and what was your basis."
The first real clue was not a dollar figure. It was a count. When the full activity log was exported rather than the summary, two years of supposedly doing nothing came back as several hundred transactions.
That number is the tell. It is also the point at which the conversation stops being about whether there is a reporting issue and starts being about the size of the reconstruction.
Reconstructing Basis Across Hundreds of Small Swaps
The work here is unglamorous and it is most of the engagement.
Every swap needs a date, the asset disposed of, the quantity, the fair market value at the time, and the basis of the specific units that went out. Basis is the hard part, because each acquisition creates a new lot and each disposal consumes some portion of earlier lots, across two years and several assets at once.
Some of it came straight out of the tool's export, which was complete for the period it covered. Some had to be pulled from the exchange underneath. A portion of the earliest positions predated the tool entirely, and those records were thinner.
Where records were genuinely incomplete, the approach was conservative rather than optimistic: document the gap, use the assumption least favorable to the taxpayer, and note why it was chosen. That produces a defensible file. It does not produce the lowest possible number, and anyone promising both is selling something.
This is the kind of work Crypto Tax Made Easy does. The firm was founded in 2021, is based in Little Silver, New Jersey, has six employees, and serves clients nationwide. A practice that sees wallet exports every week knows which tools produce complete histories and which quietly truncate them, which is knowledge that is difficult to acquire on your own account.
Crypto Tax Made Easy has 5 verified client reviews on Sam's List as of 2026-09-16. Each review is submitted by an individual who identifies as a client of the firm and rates it on communication, subject-matter knowledge, and overall satisfaction. Reviews reflect those individual experiences and do not represent an endorsement by Sam's List. Crypto Tax Made Easy is a paying Sam's List member, and payment does not buy, influence, or remove reviews. Ratings and rankings are not indicative of future performance or results.
The limitation worth stating: reconstruction work is expensive, and it is charged by effort rather than by outcome. For a small portfolio, the cost of the analysis can exceed anything it changes on the return. Ask for a scoped estimate after a look at the transaction count, before authorizing the full project.
The Outcome Ran Both Ways
This is the part that gets misreported in stories like this one.
The corrections did not all point in one direction. Some periods produced realized gains that had gone entirely unreported, because assets that ran were trimmed near their highs. Other periods produced realized losses that had gone unclaimed for the same reason in reverse, since a rebalance into a falling asset disposes of something at a loss.
Netting those against each other across two years is exactly why the reconstruction had to be complete rather than sampled. A partial analysis would have found whichever side someone looked for first.
The honest summary of the outcome is that the investor ended up with an accurate position rather than a better one. Accuracy is worth paying for, and it is not the same thing as a refund. Someone else running the same exercise on a different portfolio and different price history could land anywhere.
What Changed Afterward
Two habits, neither of them complicated.
A quarterly export instead of an annual one. Pulling the full transaction log four times a year takes minutes and keeps the records close to the events, which is when they are cheapest to reconcile.
And a different default assumption: read what a tool does, not what it is called. "Set it and forget it" describes the user's effort, not the account's activity. Any tool that trades on your behalf is generating transactions on your behalf, and those are yours to report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is swapping one cryptocurrency for another a taxable event?
Generally yes. A crypto-for-crypto trade is treated as a disposal of the asset given up, and gain or loss is measured against your basis in it, even though no dollars change hands. This applies whether you executed the swap yourself or a tool executed it under rules you set. Your specific facts belong with a preparer.
Does an automated tool report my transactions to the IRS?
Do not assume it does, and do not assume the absence of a form means the absence of an obligation. Reporting requirements for digital asset platforms have been changing, coverage varies by platform and by type of activity, and your obligation to report accurately does not depend on whether a form arrived. Confirm what your specific platforms issue and for what years.
What if I cannot reconstruct basis for older positions?
It happens often, especially for assets acquired before a tool or exchange was involved. The workable approach is to gather what exists, document precisely what is missing and why, and use conservative assumptions for the gaps rather than favorable guesses. A documented conservative estimate is defensible in a way an undocumented optimistic one is not.
Is it worth paying for a reconstruction if my portfolio is small?
Sometimes not, and a good firm will tell you that. The cost scales with transaction count and record quality rather than with portfolio size, so a small account traded frequently can cost more to clean up than a large one held quietly. Get the transaction count first, then a scoped estimate, then decide.
If your portfolio has been on autopilot for a year or more, export the full transaction log before you assume nothing happened. You can browse accountants on Sam's List who work with digital assets.
