NVIDIA Concentrated Stock Strategy: When NVDA Becomes Most of Your Net Worth
Sam's List | 2026-08-24
For some NVIDIA employees, the biggest financial-planning problem is not choosing investments. It is deciding what to do when NVIDIA stock has become a very large percentage of net worth.
A concentrated position can happen quietly: RSUs vest, ESPP shares accumulate, the stock appreciates, and future compensation remains tied to the same company. At that point, your career risk and portfolio risk may be pointing in the same direction.
Calculate your current NVIDIA concentration
Start with a simple measure:
NVIDIA concentration = current value of NVIDIA shares ÷ total investable assets.
For example, if you hold $4 million of NVIDIA stock and have $6 million of other investable assets, NVIDIA represents 40% of the $10 million portfolio. If you wanted to model a 20% target while keeping total portfolio value constant, you would compare the current $4 million position with 20% of $10 million, or $2 million. That does not mean selling $2 million is automatically the right decision; it tells you the size of the concentration gap to analyze.
Do not forget future equity
Current shares are only part of the picture. Add upcoming RSU vesting, ESPP purchases, cash needs, taxes, and any restrictions on trading. Someone with a 30% current concentration and significant unvested equity may have more economic exposure than the portfolio percentage alone suggests.
Common ways concentrated-stock plans are evaluated
- scheduled diversification over multiple vesting events or tax years;
- sale decisions after RSU vesting;
- tax-lot selection and capital-gain modeling;
- 10b5-1 planning when relevant and permitted, coordinated with company counsel/compliance;
- charitable giving strategies for appreciated shares where appropriate;
- estate-planning and liquidity needs;
- keeping enough company exposure to match the employee's risk tolerance without letting one stock dominate the plan.
What kind of advisor should an NVIDIA employee look for?
Look for demonstrated experience with equity compensation, executive compensation, stock-option planning, concentrated positions, and high-net-worth financial planning. Minimum asset levels and geography matter too, so the “best” advisor is not the same for every employee.

You can also use the RSU tax calculator to estimate a vesting event, then read the NVIDIA RSU tax guide and NVIDIA ESPP guide.
Measure first, then decide
Almost every concentrated-position conversation improves once the number is on the table. Add up vested shares, ESPP purchases and shares bought outright, divide by total investable assets, and then look at what the next twelve months of vesting does to that ratio. The NVIDIA stock concentration calculator produces both figures, including an illustrative comparison against a target percentage you choose.
Sequencing a reduction, rather than a single decision
Reducing a large position is usually a schedule, not an event. Elements people commonly use include selling recently vested shares whose basis is close to the current price so the tax cost of trimming is small, staging sales across tax years to avoid stacking gains into one bracket, prioritising long-held lots when long-term treatment matters, and pairing sales with a specific reinvestment plan so the proceeds do not sit in cash by accident.
Trading windows and 10b5-1 plans
Employees are bound by company insider-trading policy, blackout periods and any pre-clearance process. Where permitted, a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted properly and while not aware of material nonpublic information can allow scheduled sales to continue on a pre-arranged basis. Eligibility, cooling-off requirements and current regulatory conditions vary, so this is a question for your company's stock administration group and your own advisors.
Charitable and estate tools
For people who already plan to give, donating appreciated long-held shares — directly or through a donor-advised fund — can reduce a position while addressing giving goals. Large single-stock holdings also interact with titling, beneficiary designations and any trust planning, which is worth reviewing once the position becomes a material share of net worth.
The behavioural part
Concentration usually builds passively: hold every vested share and the position grows on its own. Anchoring to a previous high, treating company stock as different from other stock, and waiting for a "better time" are the patterns that keep positions larger than intended. A written policy decided in advance is the standard defence.
None of the above is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.

Model concentration as a moving target
An NVIDIA employee’s company-stock exposure can change every quarter through RSU vesting, ESPP purchases, market movement and any sales or charitable gifts. A one-time percentage can therefore understate future risk.
Use the NVIDIA stock concentration calculator to compare today’s percentage with a forward-looking estimate that includes expected vesting. Then map the result against your spending needs, tax obligations, retirement assets and willingness to tolerate a sharp decline in one stock.
Four levers besides an immediate large sale
- Future vesting decisions: determine in advance what you expect to do with shares as they vest.
- Tax-lot selection: review basis and holding period before selling; the most tax-efficient lot is not always the only consideration.
- Charitable giving: appreciated shares may be relevant for philanthropic goals, subject to tax and charity rules.
- 10b5-1 planning: for people subject to trading restrictions, a properly established plan may help create a prearranged trading framework when appropriate and permitted. Company policy and securities-law requirements matter.
Include unvested equity in the planning conversation
Unvested RSUs are not the same as owned, investable shares, but expected vesting can be important for scenario planning. See the NVIDIA RSU vesting and refresher guide and the NVIDIA RSU tax guide before deciding how to manage upcoming awards.
When outside planning help becomes more useful
Complexity tends to rise when company stock represents a large share of net worth, vesting is recurring, taxes span multiple states, or charitable and estate goals are involved. If you want to compare professionals, use our NVIDIA employee financial advisor guide.
